Yes, it finally happend… I installed WhatsApp! As already mentioned in a previous post (please read: The Google Exit Strategy), I had to close my eyes and jump over. I did it for lack of alternatives. I still think this is a bad idea, because you simply cannot trust Facebook, Inc.
Yes, there are alternative and “secure” messaging apps. One of them is Threema, a Swiss hosted service, that is even GDPR compliant. I think this is a really good solution, if you do not agree with Facebook’s data policies. However, Threema has actually only about 4 million users and I did not want to become once again the Alien in my own contact network. How useful is a GDPR compliant messaging app, if your friends do not care about it? And if nobody of your own contacts is using the exotic chat client? That’s why I will now ignore my own data protection policy and meet my friends and colleagues on the devil’s network. WhatsApp, here I come! 🙂

My friends are now asking what happens next? Here some guesses from them:
- Hell freezes over
- The end of the world has come
- Armageddon
- The Last Judgement
- etc.
Let’s see…
Cheers,
Alex
