There is something almost impressive about a navigation system that warns you about a traffic jam at the exact moment you drive into it. This morning in Zurich, I reached the back of a stationary queue. And just as I stopped, the road on my Tesla’s navigation screen turned red. Thank you, Tesla. I had noticed. The brake lights of the twenty cars ahead were a subtle clue.
I even pay for Tesla’s Premium Connectivity subscription, which includes live traffic visualisation. The map proudly carries Google’s name, although that tells me little about who is responsible for this particular masterpiece of uselessness.

And it gets better. When I abandon the congested road, take an alternative route and start moving again, the traffic display suddenly turns blue. Apparently, the traffic jam has miraculously disappeared because I am no longer sitting in it.
I have no idea whether the problem is outdated traffic data, delayed updates or Tesla’s interpretation of the information. But I do know what I expect from a navigation system: tell me about the traffic before I become part of it.
As always, just my five cents.
